HP Pavilion Dv6-3050us 15.6-Inch Laptop

Came very quickly. Kudos to Amazon for shipping and packaging. Love this computer. It has in my opinion, the best array of features for a sub $1000 computer. I thought initially that a 15.6 inch screen might be a tad bit to big but it is perfect. Not too big and not too small either.I still feel like I have to be careful in handling this computer. Maybe because its my first, but it seems to be well built. I like the brushed aluminum finish versus the glossy finishes many laptops have had up till now. great thinking from HP. The combo Ati 4250 and 5650 video cards are awesome too. Now granted, it won't run the absolutely newest spankin brand new titles coming out, but if you are a light to moderate gamer who has mostly older titles (2-4 years old) or just needs a system with good graphics this system fits the bill. Flight Simulator X has issues when flying in new york. Not sure if that's a processor, video card or actaul game issue but then again, that game is hard to run on any system. Did run Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on this dv6 and it handles it like a dream. The 1 GB of DDR3 ram on the Ati Mobility Radeon HD5650 is good, but the best in line for gamers is GDDR5. But then again, I didn't buy this computer for gaming alone. I look forward to doing more with it as I've only had it for a couple of days, but so far it is excellent. It runs videos, even HD Videos (720P) very smoothly. A must buy...especially for those going to school

First I should mention that I only use this laptop for about two weeks, and this is my first tablet PC. So be cautioned for my unintended bias.

Pros:
1. the price. You cannot find other tablets on the market with similar specs (e.g., cpu, HD, and ram) at this price range. Tablets from Lenovo or Dell would cost you double.
2. The cpu (i3-ulv) seems to be (or more than) powerful enough for most applications. I don't play computer games, but I do lots of cpu-demanding scientific computing. It turns our that this machine works pretty well, and the response is quick.
3. The metallic design looks modern and cool; the build quility is great.
4. Good battery life. I think it can run for 5, 6 hrs on battery (but I should confess that the estimate comes from one of the windows 7 desktop gadgets; i haven't empirically tested it myself).

Cons:
1. Maybe it's because of the 7200 rps HD, I can sense a constant vibration when I lay my palm on it while typing.
2. The static from the HD and fan (or something else?) can become a little too noticable in a quiet environment.
3. The air blown out of the vent can get warm under high CPU utilization. Right now it's not bothering me at all, but if I switched the cpu to i5 then the heat might be a point of concern.
4. The useable screen area is actully one inch less than the proclaimed 12.1".
5. The laptop is preloaded with too many bloatwares.

But overall this is a great tablet at an affordable price. Highly recommended

Nice design, nice big bright screen. Of course I didn't expect to run high end graphics. But when I open iTunes and scroll, the album covers get all "smeared" over one another, and in fact the song list doesn't get updated as a scroll. That's no good for 3 stars. I haven't seen this happen on any other computer. Please let me know if anyone else had the same problem

I wanted to replace my 2005 laptop with a 4GB, Core i3 machine and went looking for the best bang for the buck in this category. I did not want thin and light - this machine would rarely leave the house and I would just get a desktop except that, these days, it's nice to be able to move the PC from desk to couch to bed to kitchen for use as a TV, as a phone, as a photo album, as toddler entertainment...

The HP was on sale and provided the absolute max amount of screen for the dollar, and that was the deciding factor for me. Unlike a few years ago, most current laptops now have tremendous similarity in design and subcontractor components, so they all have decent keyboard, memory, hard drive, webcam, etc. But the screen on the HP was enormous compared to others at this price point and the casing had a nice texture.

I am very, very happy with this machine. If you are looking for desktop replacement, go big and you will not be disappointed. The only minor flaw so far is the miniature up/down arrows mentioned by another reviewer, though you canalways use the numeric keypad as backup arrows. I actually like the reprogramming of the useless F1-F12 keys for volume and other functions (a la Mac Book Pro) and consider this a plus.

Again, great value, great feel, freaking giant screen. Love it.

This laptop is almost awesome, except for one crucial problem: the touchpad. It is so bad it makes the laptop almost unusable without an external mouse.

The touchpad is a BAD knockoff of the apple touchpad from their macbookpro line. The HP/Synaptics touchpad on this model of laptop allows for multi-touch gestures, though scrolling is the only one that seems to work. Despite this multi-touch ability they did not enable two-finger touch to be a right-click. Massive drawback.

The touchpad has the feature that if you push down on the touchpad with pressure, it will physically "click". Here is the problem:

Left clicking: A light tap on the touchpad, anywhere, counts as a left click. But a heavy tap that makes the "click" in the touchpad happen, only works INSIDE of the little drawn rectangles that are the right and left "buttons". This is hugely counter-intuitive. You'll be scrolling away down a document and go to left click on something and because you pushed it a hair too hard, and it doesn't count. This becomes infuriating after the 10th time. It has to be lightly, or inside the little drawn on box. Accidentally drag another finger over the touchpad while you are clicking? NOTHING. no click. Leave a finger of the left "button" like you would on a normal touchpad with buttons? NOTHING. no click

Right Clicking: Apple made their multi-touch mouse right click when you touch it with 2 fingers. HP, when deciding to make a knock off of their mouse, left this out. Instead left clicks can ONLY happen inside of the little left button box that is drawn onto the touchpad. Light taps in the box don't work, must be a hard tap so the touchpad "clicks". A light tap, even inside of the "left button" box, is a right click.

The rest of the laptop: Decent. With a core i5 and plenty of ram, this laptop is snappy running Windows 7. The screen is gorgeous. Onboard hdmi, vga, esata, and gigabit nic are all nice features. I'd like more than 3 usb ports, but that's not a deal breaker for me. They integrated the hp quick launch buttons into the F keys, which would be annoying if I used them. I never used them, however, on my previous HP and didn't plan on it for this one, so no big deal.

The laptop isn't exactly light, but it is lighter than the previous model with the same size screen. Overall weight I would rate as good. It has a full keyboard with number pad, which is nice.

Overall: Laptop is good if you don't plan on using the built in touchpad. If you plan on using this touchpad constantly, keep looking. I've used it for 2 weeks now and still haven't gotten used to this strange touchpad. HP massively missed the mark when coping apple's multi-touch touchpad, and completely fubar'ed it.
